Design your niche

Exceptionally designed spaces for your personal taste in living.

Our goal

Niche for design is a company aimed at creating exceptional spaces for living, working and playing. Whether you require inspiration of full service design implementation, we will guide you in creating your very own niche.

Niche

from the latin word nidus ‘nest’ and french word nicher ‘create a nest’.

Meet the Designer

Niche for Design owner Erika MacKay has an inherent passion for design which began to be apparent when she was a child. Often seen clipping floor plans and decor images from magazines, Erika was notorious for filling her school notebooks with sketches and unique design ideas for floor plans. Having been exposed to a lifetime of home renovations, Erika identified her niche and pursued a Bachelor's Degree in Interior Design from Algonquin College in Ottawa, Ontario. Since then she has worked in commercial, retail, government, hotel and residential design.

Erika also enjoys teaching decorators, as a part-time instructor in Conestoga College's Interior Decorating program. Her expertise in space planning, colour, materials, and trends; along with her ability to create drawings and renderings to help you visualize your new space; will make Erika a great asset to your next project.

Five reasons to hire a designer for your next project

1
Expertise - we are trained problem solvers who are familiar with the best products and materials to suit your application.
2
Visualization skills - designers can identify potential in your space and can help you to see it too by providing professional drawings, renderings and sample boards.
3
Save money! Get the most out of your budget – remember we have done this before. We know where to shop and what to look for to get you the best deal and product for your money. Also, working with an expert prevents costly mistakes and can help ensure you are adding value to your home.
4
Take advantage of special discounts and pricing when working with a designer!
5
Access to exclusive trade-only showrooms and suppliers. Make your space unique with custom design elements you won't find anywhere else.

Oohs and Aahs at Living Lighting…

Last night was the annual Living Lighting field trip for my Interior Decorating students. As always, this visit is full of oohs and aahs, from students as they browse the array of fixtures and price points displayed at this local showroom. Our gracious hosts, Cathy (co-owner) and Sarah (who is a recent grad of the Conestoga Decorating program) were so knowledgable and enthusiastic about their products and services.

As part of their field trip activity, students were asked to source a favourite fixture and I couldn’t resist choosing one as well. This gorgeous piece caught my eye as soon as I entered the showroom.

This gold finish is so on trend right now and the whimsical organic shape says modern and classic, all at the same time!

Are stainless appliances on the way out?

Over the past two years I have seen colourful (yes, that avocado green might actually happen AGAIN) appliances popping up with increasing frequency at Interior Design shows and in industry magazines.
