As designers, we pay close consideration to the potential users and function of each area we design. Here are a few of the elements that make up a successfully integrated lobby design:

Elements of Mid Century Modern Design…

The term “Modern,” in reference to design does not actually refer to a “new” style as is often implied by the use of the word in other contexts. In fact, the “modern,” style is exemplified by simplicity, function and often natural materials and has roots dating back to the 1800s.

Mid century modern style refers to a current trend which is based on elements that were popular around the middle of the last century (1950s). This nostalgic style is identified by iconic and stylistic elements such as;

Tapered wood: Often seen in Danish modern or scandinavian teak furniture.

Chair from Design Within Reach

Moulded Plastic: Featured in accessories, tables and chairs- such as these iconic chairs by Charles and Ray Eames (http://eamesoffice.com/charles-and-ray/)

Eames Chairs

Space-age Elements: This era of discovery brought some very uniques forms in design. This new Sputnik- inspired fixture from Zuo Modern is one example of the continued influence of this style.

When combined together or used as accentuating elements in other styles, mid century pieces can add a unique nostalgic flare. Live in a post-war era home? A bit of mid-century iconic design may feel right at home in your space!
